Introduction to JOUR
DU has a long history of producing award-winning journalists. The B.A. in Journalism Studies prepares graduates to enter the broad field of journalism with a solid core of writing and ethical training. While many students come to DU to study print journalism, many have also gone on to successful careers in broadcast and online.

The SOC internship program is also an integral aspect to the major, offering students the chance to experience television, radio, print, and online journalism first-hand. Majors are also encouraged to work for one of the DU student media, particularly The Clarion.

A unique facet of the degree is the required Interdisciplinary Cognate, or secondary area of specialty, that allows Journalism majors to assemble related courses from across the university. This allows the journalist to graduate with not only the skills and perspectives to be a good journalist, but further provides them with a specialty - political science, business, history, sports, etc. - that will prove useful in entering the journalism job market.

Interdisciplinary Cognate

All Journalism Studies majors must complete 16-20 hours of related coursework outside of their major. These courses should be chosen, with the help of an advisor, according to a central topic or theme outside. For example, someone interested in writing about politics might combine cognate courses in Political Science, Sociology, Public Affairs, History, etc.

All courses for the major or minor require a "C-" or better. Check course schedules for prerequisites and lab fees. If you have questions, please contact Undergraduate Co-Directors Rod Buxton, 303-871-3952, or Elizabeth Suter, 303-871-4492.
