Introduction to COMN
In forming the School of Communication in 1991, the faculty decided to
integrate the specialties of both departments into a single degree program.
The Communication major and minor therefore takes advantage of what both
departments have to offer our students. Students do not major in "Human
Communication" or "Mass Communication" but rather can integrate
the two, if they chose, toward a cohesive understanding of what it means
to communicate.
Communication Major
Minimum 45 hours; maximum 80 hours.
No more than 60 hours in one category (COMN, HCOM, or MCOM)
NOTE: These requirements are for general reference only and should not
be used for advising. Contact Undergraduate Co-Directors Rod
Buxton, 303-871-3952, or Elizabeth Suter, 303-871-4492.
The Communication major offers a flexible program for students interested
in communication as a field of study and/or practice. Within the major,
the School of Communication offers five modules, or areas of concentration,
in which a student can focus her or his studies:
- Communication
Management
- Culture
and Communication
- Film
and Video Production
- Interpersonal
Communication
- General
Communication
Each of these modules offers students the foundational knowledge and
practical skills required in its particular arena of communication. In
these modules, students can take courses from both departments in the
School of Communication (Human Communication Studies, and Mass Communications
and Journalism Studies).
Students are required to choose and complete at least one module to graduate
with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication. It will be possible for
students to complete more than one module and/or sample from several modules
before deciding which module to complete. Each module will have one introductory
course that students can take before deciding which module to pursue.
Within each module, students will meet specific requirements, as defined
by the faculty whose area of expertise resides in that module. The required
courses provide the foundation, history, and basic skills that the student
will need to complete the advanced courses in the module. In most of the
modules, sequenced courses facilitate an integrated approach to the overall
focus. To complete the module, each student will participate in culminating
practicum/colloquia wherein the student publicly presents a final project
to faculty and fellow students. As a capstone presentation, this project
will showcase the student's acquisition of knowledge and skills in the
module area.
Communication Minor
The Communication minor is much less structured than the major,
allowing students to select the courses that best complement their major.
Students minoring in Communication take 24 hours in Communication (HCOM,
MCOM, COMN), 10 of which must be upper division (2001 or 3000 level).
All courses for the major or minor require a
"C-" or better. Check course schedules for prerequisites and
lab fees. If you have questions, please contact Undergraduate Co-Directors Rod Buxton, 303-871-3952, or Elizabeth Suter, 303-871-4492.
