About the School of Communication

The University of Denver's School of Communication (SOC) is committed to the education and advancement of individuals capable of impacting communication worldwide by offering innovative undergraduate and graduate programs with advanced intellectual and theoretical foundations through a scholar/artist faculty committed to leading edge communication theory and practice.

History
The SOC was formed in 1991 by two long-standing and distinguished departments: Human Communication Studies and Mass Communications and Journalism Studies. With 25 faculty members teaching over 600 students in nine graduate and three undergraduate programs, the SOC began granting degrees in 1894 as the Department of Oratory. Throughout its 114-year history, SOC faculty have been academic leaders and pioneers in such areas as: broadcasting, cable telecommunications, intercultural communication, interpersonal communication, leadership, media effects, media economics, media management, research methods, and teams and team work.

Global Awareness
In recognition of the increasingly global and digital nature of communication, the SOC has been a leader in integrating these two areas into its curriculum. In recent years, members of the SOC faculty have brought international experience to the students through speaking and conducting research in such diverse locales as Australia, Canada, China (Beijing, Guangzhou, Hangzhou, and Hong Kong), Costa Rica, Great Britain, Ireland, South Africa, Switzerland, Taiwan, and Zambia.

Digitalization
Anticipating the role of digital media and arts in the 21st century, the SOC founded one of the first digital media studies degree programs (both B.A. and M.A.) in the world. The awareness of and emphasis on the digital age has manifest itself in the SOC's facilities, curriculum and co-curricular projects, such as the DU Portfolio Community.
