Undergraduate Scholarship Information

Undergraduate Scholarship Applications are now available from the School of Communication. Students majoring in COMN or JOUR are eligible for all four, though each award has particular requirements. Digital Media Studies students are eligible to apply for the Sean Michael Sullivan Memorial Scholarship. All applications are available on the School of Communication Web site (http://soc.du.edu), and completed applications with supporting materials are due by Monday, April 7, 2008.

Bettie I. Lopez Endowed Scholarship

The Bettie I. Lopez Scholarship was established by the friends and family of Bettie Lopez and provides support to junior and senior students majoring in Journalism studies and/or Communication in the School of Communication at the University of Denver.

Students should have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and demonstrated financial need. Preference given to juniors and seniors majoring in Journalism.

Palmer Hoyt Scholarship

The Palmer Hoyt Scholarship was established in December 1970 to honor Palmer Hoyt who was retiring as editor and publisher of The Denver Post. The scholarship was established for full-time undergraduate students in the School of Communication at the University of Denver.

Students should have a good academic standing and financial need. Preference will be given to juniors and seniors with a proven track record in Communication or Journalism Studies.

Lavon Vogel Endowed Scholarship

The Lavon Vogel Endowed Scholarship is a merit/need-based scholarship to be awarded at the end of the sophomore year to be applied to the junior year. Requirements:
- Minimum of 12 quarter hours completed in Communication
- Declared major in COMN or JOUR
- Sophomore Standing
- Signatures of support from one COMN faculty member and one faculty person outside of COMN
- Personal statement of goals within the major

Frances A. Melrose Scholarship

The Frances A. Melrose Scholarship was established in December 1999 in recognition of Frances A. Melrose’s fifty-seven year career at the Rocky Mountain News. The scholarship was established for full-time undergraduate students interested in Journalism in the School of Communication. Students should have a good academic standing and financial need. Preference will be given to juniors and seniors with a proven track record in Journalism Studies.

Sean Michael Sullivan Memorial Scholarship

The Sean Michael Sullivan Scholarship Fund was established by alumni and friends of Sean Michael Sullivan, BA ’93. The Fund provides scholarship awards based on merit and demonstrated financial need to students engaged in Mass Communications, Journalism Studies, or Digital Media Studies in the School of Communication. Applicants should be at least sophomore standing and have a proven track record in Communication, Journalism Studies or Digital Media Studies.
